“Where every child matters.”
The children and parents of St Joseph’s RC Primary School, Ordsall, Salford, were shocked and devastated to receive the news that our headteacher, Miss Ambrose, was to retire at the end of the Autumn term. Just three days notice.
It seems that this might not entirely have been a decision she made herself, but was instead something instigated by the board of governors, perhaps as a result of pressure over time. She was apparently feeling upset at letting down the school, something that no parent we know would have accused her of.
We do not believe that this can be justified, and fear for the future of our school, for it is “our” school. We are a family, and one of ours has been wronged. The abrupt nature of Miss Ambrose’s departure, after over 18 years as headteacher, is totally shocking, and we cannot believe that the love and care she has for us all will be continued by strangers from outside. Our school has a character all of it’s own, totally different from other schools in the area, and we love it, and do not wish it to change. Without Miss Ambrose, our guiding light, we struggle to see how things can continue in the same way.
To cause such distress and disruption cannot possibly be in the best interests of the school. Miss Ambrose’s retirement should have been a cause for celebration, announced and planned for in advance, bringing the school together. Not thrust upon us, and her, in the middle of the school year, and at Christmas too!
